Flavours of Favours

Recently a friend asked me to arrange some passes for the upcoming india fashion weeek.I,in turn asked another friend, who was working with the publicity managers of fashion week organisers, to oblige. As expected,he said he will try.
Just as i lay in my bed that night,I wondered what a flavoured favour had travelled from my friend to me and then to my another friend and then to his boss(if at all he would muster the courage to do so!).
What I could not help but think was, what was there in these shows except for some hot pair of legs that everybody wanted to get crushed between (or some bolder ones to sail their way through).
Was it really the garments and the designs and the fabric that was on display??
As much as I know,my friend and hundreds of people like him were unlikely to understand the art that designing was(if at all someone can call it an art!).All everybody wanted to know was;
How well a particular choreographer managed his/her models for a particular show
How much of cleavage would be on display and, ofcourse,
How obnoxious and wierd some fresh pass-outs from all the designing institutes could be in the name of creativity...
The chain of favours had some flavour to it.Flavour of fun, sex, colour and some expected dating....
How much of it would be accomplished is not important, what is important is why do our fashion exhibitions are never able to accomplish anything more than all this?
The money, energy and resources that go into organising all these shows generally go down the drain as business acumen on the part of our designers and organisers is not up to the mark or atleast not even half of what it should be.
Their energy goes into making page 3 contacts rather than making international and
other business related contacts. And then, there are conflicts over trademark designs and piracy of them!
What are these designers gonna do with their designs if they are not able to sell them??After all,how much can someone go on storing in their respective warehouses???
With such noble thoughts i went to sleep that particular night with a mental note to follow up on my friend to arrange 2 passes for me....

what you said about the fashion industry sounded like an insight!
have you ever walked the ramp yourself? because you seem to know far too much for an outsider...and for outsiders in general...that was too much information.
by the way, just so you know, 61 of the top 100 labels in the world are manufactured in India. from Valentino, Armani, Hilfiger to Oscar de La Renta...
Fashion week is the place where Ravi Bajaj, Ritu Beri, Shyam Ahuja and all got a chance to attend the Paris and Milan Fashion week. And yes, open stores there.
So at one end of the spectrum it is a hunting ground or wannabes' and horny good for nothings but on the other...it is making fashion an industry to reckon with in a country that still wants censor cuts on kissing scenes in movies.

ps- you on the ramp sounds fun ;-)

  • Hey Harjee,Im myself a wannabe writer so knowing a bit about what goes around me is justified...
But I do agree with you. What my point is how many people know about all major labels getting their stuff made in india???
The need is to let the work of all such export houses known to people like me.The point is to ensure that we create more Ritu Beris and Ravi Bajajs, every year.
Recently saw Ashish Soni doing some good work in the 'Milan Fashion Week'.But what I disliked was that he was everywhere reffered to as 'the guy from far east".I mean how absurd is that????
What I would like to see in the coming times is our designers geeting their due recognition with the respect that should come with it...
    what say???

  • what you ask for comes with time.
be patient. keep delivering over time. and you will get your due.
dues don't come in EMIs...they come as deposit maturities...

  • Hi,

Good to read all that ......

Its strange how different two people can think who live in the same world...

Is that the time one does not have to think all that, 'coz the mind always is preoccupied with something or other. Which may be is Self-centredness caused as perception of vision that holds one image to eye.

OR...only the enlightened ones are able to think and see the other side of the coin.

Hope to read more from you.

  • Hi Shruti!
I, somehow, agree to all what you wrote but then its about the perception. you, as i noticed, are worried about actual good work lacking behind rather than name sake. but please be considered- name, these days, plays better role than just quality. however, name without quality for long looses its strength. participating in such events by new comers or old designers itself is a big game. designers in such shows earn fame(good or bad) which further gets their pictures on PAGE3(as u mentioned) and at the end - money/sex/business contacts (thats a lot for this industry and for most of designers. those who dream and fight for more either gets success or looses everything).

    commenting to Harjee - true!
lot of intl brands have their manufacturing units in India. but thats it (for cost factor)! designs are made and finalized in their corporate offices only(some times our Indian designers get lucky). even our Indian brands like- Gini and Jony, Arvind Mills get the designs from west.

    Cheerz.
